On 28 January 2025, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Gov, a dedicated AI platform developed specifically for US government agencies. Delivered via Microsoft Azure’s cloud services, the platform provides access to OpenAI’s most advanced language models for public sector use.
ChatGPT Gov enables government bodies to adopt AI technologies while complying with stringent security and regulatory standards. These include Level 5 military-grade security clearance (IL5), CJIS compliance for criminal justice data protection, ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), and FedRAMP—the highest level of federal cloud security certification. The platform is already having a considerable impact on US public administration: over 3,500 federal, state, and local agencies, involving nearly 90,000 users, have sent more than 18 million messages through the system. Use cases include supporting biological research at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, improving multilingual services at Minnesota’s State Enterprise Translation Office, and a pilot programme in Pennsylvania, where employees have cut time spent on routine tasks by an average of 105 minutes per day. The Air Force Research Laboratory is also using the platform to automate administrative tasks and support AI education initiatives.
ChatGPT Gov incorporates many of the core features of ChatGPT Enterprise, including the GPT-4o model, which delivers exceptional performance in text interpretation, summarisation, coding, and mathematics. The platform allows users to create and share custom GPTs within government workspaces and offers an administrative console to manage users, groups, and single sign-on. OpenAI is continuing to pursue FedRAMP Moderate and High certifications for the ChatGPT Enterprise SaaS product and is also exploring the expansion of ChatGPT Gov to Azure’s government-certified regions.
