OpenAI announced ChatGPT Health on 7th January 2026, enabling users to securely connect their medical records and wellness apps to the AI chatbot. The company analysed deidentified ChatGPT conversations and found that more than 230 million people globally ask health and wellness questions on ChatGPT every week. ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis and treatment, and it is not supposed to replace medical care.

Karan Singhal, who leads health AI at OpenAI, said during a press preview that the company had been laying the groundwork for ChatGPT Health for approximately two years. The startup has partnered with b.well, a health data connectivity infrastructure provider, which will allow users to share their medical records with ChatGPT Health. Users will also be able to connect to Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, the lab testing startup Function, and other data sources. Due to the sensitive nature of health data, ChatGPT Health builds on existing protections with additional, layered safeguards—including purpose-built encryption and isolation—to keep health conversations protected and compartmentalised. OpenAI stated that conversations within ChatGPT Health will not be used to train its foundation models.

ChatGPT Health will initially be made available to a small group of early users who will offer feedback and refine the experience, with OpenAI planning to expand access in the coming weeks. Users with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are eligible. Medical record integrations and some apps are available in the U.S. only, whilst connecting Apple Health requires iOS.
