Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced the roadmap for new artificial intelligence models on February 12, 2025: GPT-4.5 will arrive within weeks, while GPT-5 will be available months later, in the second half of 2025. The announcement is particularly significant as OpenAI is radically simplifying its product portfolio and will be making a flagship model freely available to users for the first time.
The central element of the new strategy is the unification and simplification of products. Instead of the currently available at least 10 different AI models - including GPT-4o, o1, o3-mini and numerous specialized variants - they are creating a unified system. In Altman's words: We want AI to work simply; we realized how complicated our model and product offerings have become. GPT-4.5 will be the last traditional language model, while GPT-5 will combine the properties of simulated reasoning (SR) and traditional language model capabilities.
The most significant change is that GPT-5's base intelligence level will be freely available to all ChatGPT users. At the same time, Plus and Pro subscribers will be able to use versions with higher intelligence levels. The system will integrate all current technologies, including the o3 model, voice recognition, search capabilities, and deeper research functions. The new model will be able to automatically select the appropriate tool for a given task, significantly simplifying the user experience.

— Sam Altman (@sama) February 12, 2025
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings.
We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.
