Meta released its standalone artificial intelligence application on April 29, 2025, directly competing with OpenAI's ChatGPT and other AI assistants – announced at the company's LlamaCon developer event in California. The new app runs on Meta's Llama AI model and offers personalised responses based on users' previous social media data.

The new Meta AI app's main advantage over competitors is its ability to leverage users' data shared over the years on Facebook and Instagram platforms. According to the company, the app delivers personalised responses by "drawing on information you've already chosen to share on Meta products," and can even remember users' dietary preferences for future conversations. The app includes a Discover feed where users can share how they use AI with friends, such as asking the AI to describe them in three emojis. The personalised features are currently available in the United States and Canada.

Meta's launch of a standalone AI app follows similar moves by Google and Elon Musk's xAI, which recently released individual apps for their Gemini and Grok assistants. In January 2025, Mark Zuckerberg stated that he believes "2025 is going to be the year when a highly intelligent and personalised AI assistant reaches more than 1 billion people, and I expect Meta AI to be that leading AI assistant." By January, Meta AI already had approximately 700 million monthly active users, according to CFO Susan Li, up 100 million from December.
