By October 2025, more than 50 percent of all online articles were generated by AI, surpassing human-written content for the first time, according to Axios. Data shows that the volume of AI-generated writing more than doubled between 2023 and 2025, while the number of human-authored articles either stagnated or declined. This marks a fundamental shift in the digital information ecosystem, with users increasingly encountering algorithm-produced texts.
Analyses highlight that the steepest growth occurred in 2024, when the share of AI-generated articles rose from 30 percent to over 45 percent, before surpassing the 50 percent threshold in 2025. Growth has levelled off in recent months, suggesting the expansion of AI-generated content has reached a plateau. However, this stabilisation does not resolve the issue of poor-quality output, as AI-generated texts continue to flood search engines and undermine content discoverability.

The long-term implications are clear: the relative weight of human journalism is steadily diminishing, while AI’s role in content production and consumption is becoming dominant. The 50 percent milestone represents a turning point in the evolution of the internet, raising challenges for publishers, regulators and users alike in maintaining quality and trustworthiness of information.
