Elon Musk's xAI launched its latest AI model, Grok 4, on 9 July alongside a premium subscription called SuperGrok Heavy priced at $300 monthly. Musk claimed that Grok 4 exceeds PhD level across all academic subjects, with the model scoring 25.4% on the Humanity's Last Exam benchmark, outperforming Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro which achieved 21.6%.

The Grok 4 Heavy version employs multiple AI agents working simultaneously on problems, then comparing their results to determine optimal answers. This version scored 44.4% on the same test when equipped with tools. The model was developed on xAI's Colossus supercomputer using 200,000 GPUs, and Musk predicted that Grok will discover new technologies within a year. However, coinciding with the launch, Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, announced her departure from the company, potentially creating additional challenges for xAI.

xAI aims to sell Grok technology to businesses and governments through its API, though the $300 monthly fee represents the most expensive AI subscription available. The company plans additional models: a coding-focused version in August, a multimodal agent in September, and a video generation model in October. Musk acknowledged that current AI tools remain primitive and unsuitable for serious commercial use, whilst expressing optimism about future developments.
