Perplexity announced its new AI-based web browser, Comet, on 24th February 2025, which the company claims will revolutionise internet browsing, just as they previously redefined search. In its post on the X social platform, the company characterised the product as automated intelligent searching and has already launched a waiting list for future users. However, no release date for the browser has been disclosed.
Comet will compete in a highly crowded market against giants such as Chrome, Safari, and Microsoft Edge, whilst other AI-based browsers are also expected to enter the market, such as Dia being developed by The Browser Company. Perplexity's CEO, Aravind Srinivas, described the project as a significant engineering achievement, whilst the company's spokesperson confirmed: "Just as Perplexity redefined search, we are reinventing the browser." The company received a $500 million investment in December 2024, its market value reached $9 billion, and it processes 100 million searches weekly for users, whilst reporting a total of 230 million monthly queries and 2 million application downloads.
The emergence of Comet could significantly impact the digital advertising market as AI-driven browsers shift from traditional keyword-based searching towards user intent and context. This trend is already generating legal disputes—as exemplified by Chegg, which has initiated legal proceedings against Google, accusing the search giant of reducing its website traffic and subscriber numbers through AI summaries. In preparation for its monetisation strategy, Perplexity launched its advertising programme in November 2024 and began developing an AI-based shopping assistant.
