OpenAI is expected to launch its GPT-5 artificial intelligence model in early August, unifying the company's o3 reasoning capabilities and multi-modal technologies into a single system. According to information published by The Verge on July 24th, the Microsoft-backed company is already preparing server capacity for the next-generation AI model, which was originally scheduled to debut as early as late May but was delayed until August due to testing challenges. Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, recently confirmed on X that "we are releasing GPT-5 soon," and demonstrated the model's sophisticated capabilities on Theo Von's podcast, where it perfectly answered a question that Altman himself didn't fully understand.

GPT-5 will be a unified AI system that integrates OpenAI's various technological breakthroughs, primarily the reasoning capabilities of the o-series and the multi-modality of the GPT-series, as explained by Romain Huet, OpenAI's Head of Developer Experience. According to Jerry Tworek, a VP at OpenAI, the new foundation model is "meant to just make everything our models can currently do better and with less model switching," while the company's ultimate goal is to merge the o-series and GPT-series into AI systems that can utilise all available tools and handle a variety of tasks. The new model is expected to employ "routing" technology, which means GPT-5 will automatically call a reasoning model in the background when it feels a query could be best handled with "deeper thinking."

The introduction of GPT-5 represents a significant advancement in OpenAI's offerings, as it simplifies the use of AI models for users by combining various capabilities into a single system. Microsoft is already testing internal builds of Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot with GPT-5 integration, and Azure platform is also being prepared for the new model. According to The Verge, GPT-5 will also be available in mini and nano versions through its API, though release dates often shift in response to "development challenges, server capacity issues, or even rival AI model announcements and leaks."
