OpenAI announced the development of the OpenAI Jobs Platform in September 2025, which will use AI technology to connect qualified candidates with companies, positioning itself as a direct competitor to Microsoft's LinkedIn platform. The platform is expected to launch by mid-2026 and will not only serve large companies: it will provide a dedicated space for local businesses and governments to find AI-skilled talent.
OpenAI is launching a new certification programme through the OpenAI Academy that will certify workers in AI skills, thereby also competing with LinkedIn's learning platform, which offers video courses and certifications across business, technology and creative fields. The certification programme will cover different levels of AI proficiency, from basic workplace AI use to AI-custom jobs and prompt engineering expertise, and will be built on ChatGPT's Study mode, which transforms the chatbot into a teacher that asks questions, provides hints and offers feedback instead of giving direct answers. OpenAI has committed to certifying 10 million Americans by 2030 and is already working with Walmart, as well as companies such as John Deere, Boston Consulting Group, Accenture and Indeed.
OpenAI's initiatives aim to address AI's impact on the labour market after chief executives, including those at Salesforce, announced mass layoffs due to AI: Benioff stated that Salesforce reduced its customer service team from 9,000 to approximately 5,000 because AI agents can now handle over one million customer conversations. Research from Stanford University's Digital Economy Lab found that early-career workers aged 22 to 25 in jobs most exposed to AI automation—such as software development and customer service—have experienced steep employment declines. Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski told CNBC's Power Lunch in May 2025 that his company's workforce has shrunk by approximately 40% in part owing to AI investments, from about 5,000 to almost 3,000 employees.
