Nvidia is developing a new AI chip based on its cutting-edge Blackwell architecture specifically for the Chinese market that significantly outperforms the currently authorized H20 model, Nvidia said on August 19, 2025. The chip, codenamed B30A, would deliver approximately half the performance of the company's most advanced modell, the B300 Blackwell GPU.
The development comes as the Trump administration has relaxed its stance on exporting high-performance AI chips to China – in August 2025, Nvidia and AMD struck a deal with the U.S. government, agreeing to give 15% of their Chinese sales over to the goverment in exchange for permission to resume selling in the region. President Donald Trump indicated in mid-August 2025 that he would be open to allowing the sale of a Blackwell processor in China, with performance reduced by 30% to 50% compared to the top model. However reguatory approval has not yet been given, Nvidia reportedly plans to deliver sample units to Chinese clients for testing as early as September 2025.
According to Nvidia the B30A chip would feature high-bandwidth memory and Nvidia's NVLink technology for fast data transmission between processors, similar to features found in the H20. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in a CNBC interview on August 19, 2025, spoke admiringly of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, stating he is knows that Huang would like to sell a new chip to China, and that he is sure that Huang is pitching the president all the time. China remains a key growth market for Nvidia, while critics argue that the U.S. should limit China's access to advanced AI technology to maintain its lead in the AI race.
