The NAACP, the prominent U.S. civil rights organisation, unveiled a blueprint aimed at preventing AI from deepening racial inequities in healthcare, calling for bias audits and equity-first standards as hospitals, technology firms, and regulators adopt AI tools. The 75-page report, Building a Healthier Future: Designing AI for Health Equity, warns that algorithms used for diagnostics, treatment, and insurance decisions risk perpetuating bias if developed without diverse input and oversight.
The report's recommendations include transparency reports, data governance councils, and community-based partnerships, addressing research showing algorithms trained on incomplete datasets can miss diagnoses in Black patients or recommend less aggressive care. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Developed in partnership with French pharmaceutical company Sanofi, the report lays out a three-tier governance framework. Dr Chris Pernell, director of the NAACP Centre for Health Equity, noted the organisation is in early stages of developing proposed legislation and will participate in a congressional briefing soon on AI usage in the rare diseases space.
The NAACP has committed to advocating for legislation mandating comprehensive inclusion of diverse datasets representing African Americans to mitigate algorithmic bias across all sectors. The blueprint underscores how precise equity standards and rigorous oversight by government entities can prevent AI systems from perpetuating racial bias or infringing on civil rights.
