On 1 October 2025, Meta announced that it may begin using data from users’ AI chatbot conversations to deliver targeted advertising. The company stated that interactions with its AI assistants—similar to ChatGPT—will be anonymised and analysed to build more precise advertising profiles. This initiative is strategically important as 97% of Meta’s revenue comes from advertising, and the firm aims to strengthen its platform by integrating generative AI.
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal and CNN, Meta stressed that it would not store full conversations but only extract “ad-relevant signals.” TechCrunch noted that users will be notified when their data is processed for advertising purposes. The new system could cover interactions across Messenger, Instagram Direct, and WhatsApp AI assistants, which already attract tens of millions of active users.
In sum, Meta’s move represents a strategic response to a saturated digital advertising market, where the company generated $134 billion in revenue in 2024. However, the use of AI chat data for advertising could spark privacy debates, as some users may fear that even anonymised conversations could influence the ads they encounter.
