On 11th December 2025, Google released a reimagined version of its research agent, Gemini Deep Research, based on its foundation model, Gemini 3 Pro. For the first time, developers can embed Google's Deep Research tool into their own apps, whilst the agent is available through a new application programming interface called the Interactions API, which enables developers to access the agent and the Gemini model series through a single access point. Deep Research benefits from Gemini 3 Pro's status as its most factual model, which is trained to minimise hallucinations during complex tasks.

The Gemini Deep Research Agent autonomously plans, executes, and synthesises multi-step research tasks, navigating complex information landscapes using web search and user data to produce detailed, cited reports. Google says that Gemini Deep Research solved 46.4% of the problems in Humanity's Last Exam correctly. The agent has a maximum research time of 60 minutes, though most tasks should complete within 20 minutes. On the same day, OpenAI launched its highly anticipated GPT 5.2, codenamed Garlic, demonstrating the intensifying competition in AI research agents.

Google's new agent bested the competition on its own benchmark and Humanity's Last Exam, however OpenAI's ChatGPT 5 Pro was a surprisingly close second and slightly bested Google on BrowserComp. The agent's new release introduces significantly improved web search capabilities, as Deep Research iteratively plans its investigation by formulating queries, reading results, identifying knowledge gaps, and searching again. This launch marks a significant milestone in making advanced AI research capabilities accessible to developers whilst maintaining factual accuracy through Gemini 3 Pro's architecture.
