In 2025, Google has taken its energy strategy to a new level by investing in fusion energy startups that could one day power the immense energy demands of AI systems. The company partnered with Massachusetts-based Commonwealth Fusion Systems, which raised over 1.8 billion USD in 2021 and is now among the world’s most heavily funded fusion ventures.
The partnership aims to bring fusion energy to commercial scale within the next decade. In 2025, Google DeepMind announced its contribution of machine learning models to control plasma processes that ensure fusion stability. According to TechCrunch, more than 30 fusion startups have each raised over 100 million USD, with total investment in the sector tripling over the past five years. Google’s strategy is therefore aligned with a broader industry consensus that scaling AI sustainably requires breakthroughs in clean energy supply.
The long-term significance of the project extends far beyond the energy sector. If fusion becomes commercially viable by the early 2030s, it could not only power AI infrastructure but also play a major role in reducing global carbon emissions. Google’s investments thus serve both business and environmental objectives, reinforcing its position at the centre of the future AI infrastructure.
