The European Commission established the EU Artificial Intelligence Office (AI Office) in January 2024, which began operations with a team of 140 experts. The office plays a key role in implementing the EU AI Act - the world's first comprehensive AI regulatory framework - with a special focus on overseeing general-purpose AI models and supporting the development of trustworthy AI.
The office operates with five departments (Department of Excellence in AI and Robotics, Department of Regulation and Compliance, Department of Security, Department of Innovation and Policy Coordination, and Department of Social Development) and two advisors (chief scientific advisor and advisor for international affairs). The organization works closely with the European Artificial Intelligence Board (AI Board), which consists of representatives from the 27 member states and coordinates the work of national authorities. The Commission's goal is to develop trustworthy AI in the internal market. The AI Office contributes to this by collaborating with relevant public and private actors and the startup community, stating the official documentation.
The EU Artificial Intelligence Office is working to develop practical codes of conduct for general-purpose AI models by the second quarter of 2025, which will include specific, measurable objectives and key performance indicators. The office is also tasked with strengthening international cooperation and promoting the EU's approach to AI worldwide. A review of the organization's effectiveness will take place in June 2026, when they will evaluate whether additional powers and resources need to be provided.
