Elon Musk's AI company xAI announced an agreement with the Pentagon to integrate its Grok AI models into the military's GenAI.mil platform, with deployment targeted for early 2026. The platform will enable 3 million military and civilian employees of the Department of War (formerly Department of Defense) to access xAI technologies at Impact Level 5, a high-security standard for handling controlled unclassified information.
The partnership brings xAI's Grok family of models to both enterprise AI and critical mission use cases, supporting administrative tasks at federal, state and local levels as well as front-line military operations. Personnel will gain access to real-time global insights from the X platform, providing the Department of War with faster situational awareness around the globe. The agreement follows the July launch of xAI for Government, when the company – alongside other leading AI firms, OpenAI, Google and Anthropic – was awarded government grants, with a ceiling of 200 million dollars.
The selection of xAI's frontier AI systems for the Department of War's GenAI.mil suite enables access to xAI technologies at Impact Level 5, positioning the company alongside major AI providers in supporting critical government operations. This agreement marks a significant expansion of commercial AI deployment into military and national security applications.
