On 20 March 2025, Anthropic announced that its artificial intelligence assistant, Claude, is now capable of internet browsing, significantly expanding the chatbot’s functionality and access to up-to-date information.
With the new feature, Claude automatically searches for and processes relevant internet sources and then responds with direct links that allow users to verify the sources. With web browsing, Claude gains access to the latest events and information, increasing its accuracy in tasks that benefit from the most recent data, Anthropic wrote in its announcement. This development represents a significant step forward in the AI assistant market. It eliminates one of Claude’s main competitive disadvantages compared to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has offered similar capabilities for some time.
The web browsing function supports numerous business use cases, including sales teams analysing industry trends, financial analysts assessing current market data, researchers building more substantial funding proposals and literature reviews, and consumers comparing product features, prices, and reviews. According to Anthropic, the feature will be extended to free users in the future while the company is also working on further developments, including voice-based interaction.
