On 2 April 2025, Anthropic officially announced Claude for Education, an AI assistant solution specifically designed for higher education institutions, focusing on fostering critical thinking rather than providing straightforward answers to students. Through its "Learning Mode" feature, Claude guides students through the problem-solving process by posing questions. The company has already partnered with three prestigious universities to roll out the service: Northeastern University, the London School of Economics, and Champlain College.
Claude for Education provides the entire institutional community with access to AI technology while employing the Socratic method to support the learning process. Rather than simply expecting correct answers from students, it assists them with questions such as "How would you approach this problem?" or "What evidence supports your conclusion?" Educators can use the service to create assessment criteria aligned with learning outcomes. At the same time, administrative staff can analyse enrolment trends and automate responses to repetitive emails. "Anthropic’s collaboration is sparking a new wave of innovation at Champlain College, offering insights that could benefit higher education as a whole," said Alex Hernandez, President of Champlain College.
With this move, Anthropic is directly competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu service, aiming to double its current monthly revenue of $115 million in 2025. The company has also launched two new student programmes—the Claude Campus Ambassadors and Claude for Student Builders initiatives—and formed strategic partnerships with Instructure and the nonprofit Internet2, which serve over 400 U.S. universities, potentially paving the way for millions to access AI in education.
