Amazon.com announced an expanded nuclear energy partnership with Talen Energy on June 11, 2025, to supply up to 1,920 megawatts of electricity from its Susquehanna plant in Pennsylvania to Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centres until 2042. The long-term deal ensures Talen a steady revenue stream while supporting Amazon's growing demand for carbon-free energy to power its cloud and AI operations, resulting in Talen Energy shares rising nearly 8% in premarket trading.

Under the agreement, Talen will supply electricity to Amazon's data centre campus adjacent to the Susquehanna nuclear power station, with capability to deliver to other Pennsylvania sites, while both companies explore building new Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) within Talen's Pennsylvania footprint and pursue expanding the nuclear plant's energy output, with the intent to add net-new energy to the PJM grid. The Vice President of Global Data Centers at AWS highlighted that Amazon is making a US$20 billion investment, the largest private sector investment in state history, creating 1,250 high-skilled jobs while powering infrastructure with carbon-free energy.

U.S. electricity demand has risen for the first time in two decades, driven by the rapid growth of data centres and artificial intelligence, prompting Big Tech companies to scramble for reliable energy sources. Meta Platforms also struck an agreement with Constellation Energy to keep one of the reactors in Illinois operating for 20 years, while Pennsylvania's Governor voiced support for the partnership as part of the state's energy development strategy, emphasising that the collaboration taps into Pennsylvania's strengths as a national energy leader, creates good-paying jobs, grows the economy and adds more power to the PJM energy grid.
