Amazon has announced a $10 billion investment in North Carolina, one of the company's largest investments in the state to date, aimed at expanding artificial intelligence and cloud computing capacity. The announcement came on June 4, 2025, and is expected to create at least 500 new high-skilled jobs while supporting thousands of positions in construction and the data center supply chain.
The investment will transform the Richmond County campus into a 20-building data center complex, providing a significant economic boost to a region that previously lost many textile industry jobs. The company has already invested $12 billion in North Carolina since 2010, contributing $13.1 billion to the state's GDP and supporting 24,000 full and part-time jobs directly, alongside 26,000 indirect positions. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced in February that the company would increase its capital expenditure to $100 billion in 2025, primarily focusing on AI initiatives.
Amazon is establishing a $150,000 Community Fund in Richmond County to provide grants of up to $10,000 supporting STEM education, sustainability, economic development, and community well-being. The company will partner with North Carolina universities and community colleges to develop data center technician programs, fiber optic fusion splicing workshops, and STEM initiatives for K-12 schools. According to Brooks Raiford, CEO of the North Carolina Technology Association, the Amazon announcement furthers North Carolina's reputation as a leading region for data centers and artificial intelligence.
