On August 5, 2025, Thomson Reuters announced CoCounsel Legal, an agentic AI platform, and the final version of Westlaw, functioning as an integrated, real-time legal assistant that significantly transforms how lawyers work by reducing legal research time by up to 70%. According to the company's statement, the new tools use artificial intelligence to automate legal research and analysis, providing comprehensive context understanding and deep search capabilities across legal databases. The new system integrates Thomson Reuters' exclusive content and technology with the Casetext AI platform acquired by the company for $650 million in August 2023 and currently used by more than 15,000 law firms worldwide.
CoCounsel Legal, available from September 3, 2025, offers six key functions including complex legal research, document summarization, privacy assessment, courtroom analysis, contract analysis, and topic research, while guaranteeing 99.9% accuracy in verifying legal citations. David Wong, Thomson Reuters' Vice President of AI and Data Science, played a key role in developing the new system, which has already proven its effectiveness among early testers who were able to answer complex legal questions 62% faster and saved an average of 3.2 hours per search. The new version of Westlaw, considered the final release according to the company, features integrated functions allowing users to turn directly to the AI assistant at any point in the research process and provides deeper analysis of case law.
Thomson Reuters' new products were tested in a closed beta program in late 2024, involving 178 law firms and legal departments, with 93% of participating lawyers reporting that the AI tools improved the quality and efficiency of their work. The new system includes numerous advanced features, including access to more than 242 million legal documents, real-time document analysis, and automated citation checking, while ensuring attorney-client privilege and data security. The new products will be available on a subscription basis at various price points, starting from a basic package at $100 per month to full enterprise solutions that can be integrated with existing legal workflows and practice management systems.
