Current AI, a pioneering nonprofit artificial intelligence initiative, launched with $400 million in initial funding on February 10, 2025, at the Paris AI Action Summit. The project aims to support AI developments that directly serve social interests, with special focus on healthcare and environmental protection goals.
The initiative is backed by nine countries – including France, Germany, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria – as well as major technology companies such as Google and Salesforce. According to Martin Tisné, the founder of Current AI, the project aims to raise a total of $2.5 billion over the next five years. The program focuses on three main areas: making quality datasets accessible, supporting open-source infrastructure, and measuring the social-environmental impacts of AI. This is supported by an open letter from CEOs and experts backing the initiative, stating that society must guide AI development to achieve the best results.
The launch was accompanied by a significant announcement from French President Emmanuel Macron, who, on the same day, revealed a €109 billion AI investment package for France. Current AI aims to support specific projects, such as Parkinson's disease research or improving long COVID treatment, all with the help of smaller, more environmentally friendly AI models.
