Miklós Sebők, in an interview with HVG, discussed the possibilities and challenges of artificial intelligence development in Hungary. He emphasized that although AI is gaining increasing strategic importance globally, Hungary is not yet fully utilizing the regulatory and development opportunities provided by the EU.
In the interview, Sebők emphasized that although AI is gaining increasing strategic importance globally, Hungary is not yet fully utilizing the regulatory and development opportunities provided by the EU. He stressed that applying EU data protection and AI regulations (e.g., GDPR, AI Act) could protect the European market against non-EU companies and create opportunities for domestic development. He mentioned that with sufficiently strict law enforcement, major foreign players such as OpenAI or Chinese DeepSeek could only maintain their presence in the EU if they fully comply with regulations. He also noted that Hungary has infrastructure suitable for AI development, such as the Komondor supercomputer, which could provide an appropriate foundation for domestic developments. However, he pointed out that it's challenging to build competitive AI models on a market basis in a country of ten million people, so government involvement and targeted investments would be needed for development. He further emphasized the role of the Artificial Intelligence National Laboratory, which conducts several promising research projects in artificial intelligence. However, their long-term success largely depends on state support, targeted financing, and a predictable regulatory environment.
